November Birthday Celebration

Mark your calendars: Friday, November 18th, we'll gather somewhere to celebrate and raise a toast to the November birthdays of Paddlefish. Bob, Jack, and Judy all have birthdays in November, and I suspect there are some more of you out there ('fess up!).

Location is still to-be-determined: someplace with drinks and, for Bob, who doesn't drink, a tabletop to dance on. (Club Havana? Piper's? Church Brew Works? Mullaney's? Red Fin Blues? Other suggestions?)

Church Boo Works

Anyone else want to head over to Church Brew Works after practice on Monday, October 31st, to do a quick carbo-load via a beer (and/or pierogis)?

Lion Dance Performance

Lion dances originated in China, but the dances were adapted and performed throughout Japan. Pittsburghers will have an opportunity to see traditional lion dance performances at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in Pitt's Bellefield Hall Auditorium, 315 S. Bellefield Ave., Oakland. The free public performance, presented by Pitt's Asian Studies Center within the University Center for International Studies, will feature a troupe of 25 musicians and dancers, registered by the Japanese government as an Intangible Folklore Cultural Asset.

A traditional form of storytelling, the dances were once performed to repel demons and evil spirits and affect rainfall and a bountiful harvest. Today, lion dances are an important part of Japan's folk performance arts and are performed annually at Handa City's spring festival. Each "lion" is animated by two dancers: The larger lion performs dances associated with the four seasons; the smaller one performs dances associated with the months of the year.

A3: Art of Adventure at the Aviary

Saturday, October 8th, 2005
7-11 p.m.

From John:

A3 is an evening of fun, food, DRINKS, entertainment with both silent and live auctions benefiting the PIONEER PROJECT.

The PIONEER PROJECT is a very worthwhile non-profit that gets kids into the great outdoors and I don't mean taking sissy nature hikes, I mean they have these kids working. They mentor kids through outdoor sports, conservation, education and environmental projects. I know of at least one hiking trail bridge and one camping shelter that the kids from the PIONEER PROJECT have personally built.

This promises to be a very fun event at the Aviary packed with outdoorsy folks. I have donated several framed art prints and an original oil painting to be auctioned off at the event.

I have advanced tickets for sale at $25.00, they'll be $35 at the door. I know this is a steep price for my cheap-ass friends, but there will be beer from the Penn Brewery and I guarantee a fun time.
