Festival News

Saturday's race schedule will be posted on the race site some time today. There may be changes after this initial post, but you'll get some sense of what the scope of the day looks like.

We'll need to rotate paddlers in and out of the boat for the various heats so that we stay strong and so that we have some Paddlefish available to drum and steer for the community teams! I'll work on that after the schedule is out and will send individual emails to people to ask for drumming/steering help.

Pauline news: the good news is that the company Pauline's consulting for likes her work and is taking her ideas seriously; the bad news is that they want her in Europe till next week. She is very disappointed that she'll be missing the festival!

On a happier note: Let's get together at Red Fin Blues after the festival (around 6 or so) to celebrate the day and the season! Lisa and Carolyn have talked to the owners, so they know we're coming. (Yet another opportunity for Jack and Chuck to borrow a sports bra and tuck a little money in there.....)

Please check the festival site for the updated schedule -- PE and Data Angels have combined forces, so the open mixed heats have been rearranged a bit. This means that later races have moved to slightly earlier times.

The seating rosters are drafted. Chuck's working with Ben to try to get the sides straightened out, and the rosters should then be good to go out (maybe tonight or tomorrow morning). The side assignments may not be perfect, so if you have a concern that about your side, please let Chuck/Ben know -- but we might need to ask some people to paddle on their less-preferred side for a race or two just since we're doing so many races.

It would be safest to try to meet up Saturday morning around 10 -- we'll get a parking space, we can work out last minute questions about the races, and we can warm up a bit and stretch. If you can't be there by 10, please let Chuck know when you'll be there (and give yourself time to find parking or to park on the island and walk over).

Bring water, Gatorade, a thermos of hot peppermint tea, fig newtons, granola, whatever you need. Eat for energy.

Please wear your uniform tank top under your festival tee shirt. (If you don't yet have a festival tee, there will be some for sale at the festival.) And black shorts -- or black tights if you're worried about being cold. It would be good to have a fleece sweatshirt on hand to stay warm and dry between races.

From Marty Silverman/Steel City Dragons ==>

To all:

As part of the Pittsburgh dragon boat festival on Saturday, the Steel City Dragons will be collecting donations of food and cleaning supplies for the flood victims in the area. Please pass this information along to the other teams.

Thanks

Volunteer drummers and steerspeople: This feels like a hugely complicated math SAT problem to me, so please bear with me.... I've gone ahead and tentatively assigned you in the pairings you initially drummed and steered in. So, for instance, I've kept Kathi and Bob together.

But now, instead of drumming and steering for Nemo, which isn't racing, Kathi and Bob will be drumming and steering for the Housing Authority team.

This works out in a pretty straightforward way for the initial sets of heats. When we find out which boat is racing when (and against whom) for the semis and finals, I may have to shuffle you around a bit. But I am hoping that, for the most part, you will be able to stick with the team you work with in the first heats of the day.

If you are drumming or steering, please try extra hard to be at Millvale by 10:00. I'll try to have Ben introduce you to the captain of the team you're working with then at the captains' meeting (which is being held at 10:30, I think).

There have been a number of changes made to the rosters, so please check in with Chuck or me in the morning to make sure you know which races you need to be ready for and where you're sitting.

I'll send out the masters roster via email.
